Lenten Activities & Stories (Almgiving, Prayer, & Fasting)

FULLY ALIVE

God created us to live in relationship with others, and to respond to each other with love. Loving relationships begin in the family, and this will be our main focus during this theme, along with two topics about friendship.

God made us male and female, and all of God’s creation is good. In the early grades, this theme is presented through a continuing story. The message of these stories is that we begin life as a result of the love our mothers and fathers shared. No matter what happens later, nothing can change that. It is part of God’s plan that we grow and are sheltered in our mother’s body before birth. After we are born, it is our family that loves and cares for us.

UNDERSTANDING EARTH & SPACE SYSTEMS: Soils in the Environment

-identify and describe different types of soils

-describe what living and non living things do that make up soil

-identify what might be in soil that we cannot see (e.g., salt, air, pesticides)

UNDERSTANDING LIFE SYSTEMS: Growth & Changes in Plants

-describe the basic needs of plants, including air, water, light, warmth, and space

-identify the major parts of plants, including root, stem, flower, stamen, pistil, leaf, seed, and fruit, and describe how each contributes to the plant’s survival within the plant’s environment

-describe the changes that different plants undergo in their life cycles (e.g., some plants grow from bulbs to flowers, and when the flowers die off the bulb produces little bulbs that will bloom the next year

Substance Use, Addictions, and Related Behaviours

-apply decision-making strategies to make healthy choices about behaviours and the use of various substances in ways that could lead to dependencies, identifying factors that should be considered (e.g., short-term use of medications can be helpful for an illness, but misuse of some medications could lead to dependency or harm; moderated television watching or computer use can provide healthy entertainment or new learning or be necessary to complete school work, but too much screen time can reinforce sedentary habits and inactivity, which can lead to social isolation and increased vulnerability to physical and mental health problems)
